Most people can relate to one TV family or another; they come in all different shapes and sizes, from the dysfunctional to the perfect, the large to the small so it’s no wonder so many of our favourite sitcoms centre around family life. So for a relaxing start to the working week we thought it would be nice to take a look at some of our most beloved TV families:
10. The Addams Family – The Addams Family
They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, who wouldn’t love the Addams Family?
9. The Mitchells – Eastenders
They may be the most dysfunctional family on TV; but that’s why we love them. Murder, adultery, sibling rivalry, the Mitchell family have it all…including TV hard man Ross Kemp!
8. The Mowrys (aka Tia Landry and Tamera Campbell) – Sister Sister
What’s not to love about Tia Landry and Tamera Campbell? Twins who were separated at birth; but find out about each other as teenagers and inevitably become the best of friends. With an annoying next door neighbour and their ever quarrelling adoptive single parents there was never a dull moment in the lives of Tia and Tamera.
7. The Waltons – The Waltons
Who doesn’t remember the Waltons? This perfect, wholesome family of nine never failed to put a smile on many a face. Close-knit and loving the Waltons were the kind of family everyone wants to be a part of; although these days you’d need group text messaging to keep track of that many kids!
6. The Harpers – Two and a Half Men
Every family has a lovable drunken uncle but the Harpers go one better, they have Charlie! Charlie; the charming bachelor playboy or a deluded sleazy misogynist, it doesn’t matter…we all loved him anyway. Whether we were laughing with him or at him we couldn’t get enough of Uncle Charlie…until they pushed him under a train of course.
5. The Arnolds – The Wonder Years
What made the Arnolds so loveable was how easy it was to identify with the family, most importantly with Kevin. His believable character made it possible for us to love and sometimes hate his family just as he did. As we remembered what it was like to be his age we identified with him as we experienced the same ups and downs in our own family lives.
4. The Cohens – The O.C
Not only are the Cohens the kind of family who would open up their (pool house) doors to a troubled teenager from Chino, they are also the kind of family who believe that bagels should be the first order of the day and that everyone should get to enjoy the holidays by partaking in their very own Cohen family Chrismukka! With family values like that who wouldn’t want to be one of the Cohens?
3. The Banks family – The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Is there any greater reason to love the Banks family than that of Will Smith? With his cheeky, somewhat mischievous nature and boyish good looks, Will Smith was the first crush of many a young girl. But it was the warm, loving and at times hilarious dynamics of this family that made the Banks family such a fond memory from 90s TV.
2. The Salingers – Party of 5
Awwww…The Salingers; it was hard not to fall in love with this family. With poor misunderstood Bailey, Claudia sleeping in her tent, Julia with her sulky face, little Owen who had no clue what was going on and big brother Charlie trying to keep it all together. Who couldn’t want to take them all in and tell them it would be OK.
1. The Gilmores – The Gilmore Girls
They talk fast, they’re cute, quirky and they’re best friends! What more could you want in a Mother daughter TV duo? Oh yeah, they love coffee! That’s more than enough reason for us to put The Gilmores at number 1, but we’re not that shallow we also love Lorelai’s determination to make sure Rory gets absolutely everything she could ever have wanted in life…that is the kind of mother we all hope to be one day.
