After the winter break, Pan Am returned to screens across the UK and we’ve bundled the episodes to give you a recap of the 1960s mid-air mid-season events.
Secrets and Lies
Kate: The story picks up where the mid-season cliff hanger left us: with a smoking gun in Kate’s hand and her fleeing the scene. Later, Kate learns that Roger has taken the blame for the shooting but she must take a lie-detector test to verify the story. After some soul-searching and practice, she passes the test and Roger tells her she’s a great spy. Any notion of quitting the CIA disappears.
Dean and Collette: We find out that Bridget, a fellow Pan Am stewardess and secret former CIA agent is allowed back to work – and she plans on reuniting with Dean. Collette convinces him to talk to her. Bridget continues to lie about her disappearance and Dean leaves. He finds Collette but she’s realised that he still needs closure with Bridget and refuses to see him for a while. Confused, Dean re-joins Bridget at the bar and she finally confesses her dark CIA secret. Dean relents and they end up in Dean’s hotel room.
Maggie: Starts dating the congressman (whose hotel bathroom she set on fire) and the horrid story she’s written about him with revealing information is published in the Village Voice – as a mystery writer and the congressman is set on finding out who wrote it.
Diplomatic Relations
Dean-Collette-Bridget: Dean wakes up next to Bridget and decides that he is over her. But, Dean loses a cufflink which Collette finds in Bridget’s bag later, and when Dean tries to confess and make amends, Collette just throws the cufflink at him because it’s a little too late for the truth.
Ted and Maggie: Maggie attends a fundraising gala with her congressman boyfriend. Ted is also at the gala with Amanda and he’s trying to find the perfect moment to propose. Maggie shares some harsh words with another politician and she’s soon revealed as the author of the tell-all article. The congressman is furious and breaks up with her, but not before Ted decides he can’t wait another minute and pops the question to Amanda. She agrees.
Back in the ladies’ room, Amanda finds Maggie crying and consoles her as best as she can – with a kiss.
Pan Am Crew: Dean to pilots the first Pan Am flight to the Soviet Union to help heal diplomatic relations. While there, Laura, Kate, Bridget and Collette go on a walking tour and are closely monitored and chaperoned. But of course, Kate has a mission to fulfil. She locates her mark but before she can do anything, Laura, who is taking pictures, is bombarded by Soviet agents. Bridget tries to defend her and they take both women into custody, convinced that they are active spies.
After a tense few hours, the Soviet hosts tell Dean that they must forget about the girls and go back to New York. Kate slips out and goes to her CIA ally. With a little convincing her ally agrees to help her and just in the nick of time, the Pan Am crew reunites and flies back to New York.
New Frontiers
Kate: Richard trains Kate to pick-pocket in order to obtain a microfilm from a target. She practices on Maggie, who thinks Kate’s just getting a little too close, and is instantly concerned that she’s giving off “the girl vibe” thanks to her kiss with Amanda.
Maggie and Ted: Maggie tells Ted about the kiss, and he starts noticing Amanda’s interactions with women. She tries to divert his concern by seducing him which is a very awkward experience for both of them. Ted asks Amanda for honesty and she finally admits she’s “more comfortable” with women but still wants to marry him.
Laura: discovers her nude photographs have been printed and put on display. She is horrified, willing to pay the art dealer $500 get them back. He agrees but tells her a high-profile buyer also wants to buy them. Art fans start to compliment the photos, telling her she is brave, making a statement and empowering women. She learns that the buyer is none other than Andy Warhol (with a little “This is TV so I’ll believe it” magic) and Laura allows the photos to be sold.
Dean and Collette: Arriving in Rome, officials notify Dean that there are contraband cigarettes on the plane and if he can’t identify the culprit, he will be held responsible. Dean realises that the culprit is Broyles, the war veteran guest pilot who has been trying to convince Maggie to join him in his illegal trade. (She says no).
But before we can wrap up with happy endings, the episode leaves viewers with another cliff hanger as it enters 1960s America’s pivotal political moment: News breaks that John F Kennedy has been shot.
